Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Colon Cancer

Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Colon Cancer

Chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting is given together with another treatment (like surgery) to increase its effectiveness.

FLOX is a combination of anti-cancer drugs for colon cancer comprising the drugs 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), leucovorin and oxaliplatin.5-FU works by interfering with genetic replication of rapidly-dividing cancer cells. Leucovorin is given in combination with 5-FU to enhance its effectiveness.Oxaliplatin is an intravenous anti-cancer drug that kills cancer cells.

FLOX usage and the addition of oxaliplatin to the drug combination of 5-FU and leucovorin (5-FU/LV)is not advised in the treatment of most patients with stage II colon cancers. For most stage II colon cancer patients who have low risk disease, active monitoring of the disease alone is a good choice.

In general, FLOX should not be considered a regimen of choice.
