Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Rectal Cancer

Chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting is given together with another treatment (like surgery) to increase its effectiveness.

5-FU works by interfering with DNA replication of cells, specifically rapidly-dividing cancer cells while oxaliplatin is an anti-cancer alkylating agent that kills cancer cells.

The usefulness of the chemotherapy drugs 5-FU and oxaliplatin after surgery in rectal cancer is limited.

However, a total of 6 months of 5-FU based treatment before surgery, during surgery and after surgery is preferred.
