First-line Systemic Chemotherapy in Patients with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Metastatic colorectal cancer refers to colorectal cancer that has spread to other sites in the body.

FOLFOXIRI is a mixture of anti-cancer drugs for colon cancer comprising the drugs 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), leucovorin, oxaliplatin and irinotecan. 5-FU works by interfering with genetic replication of rapidly-dividing cancer cells. Leucovorin is given in combination with 5-FU to enhance its effectiveness. Oxaliplatin is an anti-cancer alkylating agent that kills cancer cells. Irinotecan is toxic to cancer cells.

If cancer cells have spread to other sites in the body, but the tumour may still be surgically removed after treatment, treatment with FOLFOXIRI may be considered. However, it must be balanced against its high risk of toxic side effects.
