What are recommendations for first-line palliative chemotherapy for soft tissue sarcoma?

Chemotherapy consisting of a single drug is preferred over treatment using a combination of chemotherapy drugs. Combination chemotherapy should be used when the primary aim of the treatment is for the tumour to respond to the treatment by decreasing in size.

Doxorubicin is a drug that inhibits growth of cancer by binding to an enzyme required for cancer cell growth. Doxorubicin is recommended for first-line treatment for most but not all sarcomas as treatment is dependent on the cancer type.

Taxanes are compounds that can interfere with growth of cancer cells. Taxanes may be used in first line treatments in angiosarcomas.
